There are many ways to learn about commonly confused English word pairs:

I could give you a list with the usual structure (below) and ask you to study it in your free time, or repeat the list in an online session.

  • Accept (verb)
    • Definition, pronunciation
    • Sample sentence
    • Not to be confused with "except"
  • Except
    • Definition, pronunciation
    • Sample sentence
    • Not to be confused with "accept"

A better way to ensure the learners really notice the difference and use the words in context over 60 minutes:

  • Create an interactive, collaborative whiteboard.
  • Ask the learners to work together to sort the similar sounding words into two columns.
  • Pick a few of the words and create Discussion questions to use them in context.
  • Split the learners into two groups to mix and match the words with the right sentences.
  • Talk about the sentences, final doubts and then introduce a topic where they get to use the word pairs in a professional setting.

I will let you guess which approach works better.
